Become Versed in Craps – Tricks and Schemes: The Past of Craps
May 18th, 2025 by Adolfo

Be cunning, play clever, and become versed in craps the right way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps formed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he established the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
