Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French headed south and located sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he established the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
