Master Craps – Tips and Strategies: The Background of Craps
August 30th, 2023 by Adolfo

Be clever, play cunning, and pickup craps the proper way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
