Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French relocated down south and discovered refuge in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
