Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about 100 years old. Current craps come about from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French moved down south and discovered safety in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and all over the nation. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
