Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French headed down south and discovered sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps.
