Be brilliant, play smart, and discover how to play craps the proper way!
Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps evolved from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French moved south and located safety in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. Many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
