Be a Master of Craps – Pointers and Schemes: The History of Craps
October 16th, 2022 by Adolfo

Be clever, play clever, and master craps the proper way!

Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Current craps developed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French moved down south and located safety in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. A few consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
