Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he established the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
