Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French moved down south and found sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. A great many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
