Pickup Craps – Tricks and Schemes: The Past of Craps
February 28th, 2022 by Adolfo

Be clever, play cunning, and become versed in craps the proper way!

Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps developed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French relocated south and discovered safety in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
