Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps formed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French moved south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
