Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French headed south and found sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he developed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
