Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A good many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
