Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about 100 years old. Modern craps come about from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French moved south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
