Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Current craps evolved from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
