Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps evolved from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French relocated south and discovered refuge in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he developed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
