Be smart, play cunning, and become versed in craps the correct way!
Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps formed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
