Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps developed from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
