Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French relocated south and located refuge in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwards, he designed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
